Cierra Hyatt
artist statement
As a photo major, I’m naturally attracted to realism and the details in a work of art. The natural essence of photography inspired me to bring it’s raw qualities to paper. Using black and white charcoal my hands act as an artistic type writer, recording every detail that my eyes can see. While working on each piece I find the process of drawing to be immersive, self-explorative, and an effective way to express my thoughts and emotions.
Although charcoal is my focused medium, I often retreat back to film and darkroom processes. Images can be altered and distorted during the development process, resulting in a new image every time. The rise of digital photography and image manipulation software inspired me to go back to basics and take on a more intimate, “trial and error” outlook on my artwork.
