artist statement
My artwork is an outlet for me to be able to express the complex visuals I see in my mind. Growing up with a learning disability it was always difficult for me to put my thoughts into words. I found that drawing was an outlet for me to connect with people when my words would let me down. As an artist I have found my work to be greatly influenced by my emotions, which has led me to a fascination with the human figure. With the use of figure I can connect myself to the person on the page and then hopefully form connections with the viewers.
My process starts off with a mindless sketch. I like to let my surrounding influence my work. Whether it is a song I listen to or something I see at a glance while driving around in my car. I take a split second and focus on the feeling and let it consume me. Expressing joy and warmth or darkness and fear I use my emphasis in drawing to bring that to life. I find that different emotions connect better with different mediums. So, I use a range of mediums, from ink to charcoal and sometimes paint when I want to make a color connection to an emotion.
My current series was inspired by my feelings of isolation during these challenging times of the pandemic. The paper bags are a way to represent feeling closed off or unseen. My hope is for the viewer to form his or her own connections with the figures. To see them selves under the mask. I hope to explore the masks more and form a series that can play on the complex emotions of this time and eventually leave the dark emotion and bring into something joyful.
